In a recent New England Journal of Medicine study, more than 90% of men who had been losing hair had stopped or slowed their hair loss in the first year they started using the hair-loss drug finasteride. The study, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, showed that taking finasteride, which works by blocking a hormone in hair follicles that controls hair growth, led to an earlier stopping of the drug.
"This is a very important finding," said Dr. Adam Friedman, a dermatologist and the co-director of the Institute for Clinical Dermatology, New York. "The reason we're talking about this is because it's a problem that's affecting so many men."
That problem can be fixed with the help of Propecia, a new drug developed by Merck. It will be sold under the brand name Proscar, which works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. "I can't think of a drug that will make the difference," he said.
"It's a very important finding, and it's not a good one," he said. "It's a very important finding that we're seeing more and more."
